Winona State University’s Department of Composite Materials Engineering will host “Composites in the Aerospace Industry,” a seminar featuring David Westlund, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Stark Hall, room 103.

A reception will start prior to the event at 3:15 p.m. at the same location.

Westlund is from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Structures and Materials Section. He will discuss composites in the aerospace industry and the role of the FAA in the aerospace industry. He will also review the Maintenance and Inspection (M&I) research portfolio that he manages and how it contributes to FAA’s mission of attempting to be the safest and most efficient system in the world.

Additional topics will include the evolution of material in aerospace, a brief history of the FAA, milestone accidents and the current state of the industry.

Westlund is a 2008 alumnus of the Composite Materials Engineering Program at WSU and received his master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University.
