Climate SummitWinona State University will host the second annual “Climate Summit: Trees Matter” April 10-12.

This year’s theme, “Trees Matter,” comes from WSU’s first steps towards becoming a Tree Campus USA with the National Registry of Arboretums. The Summit will raise awareness and engage students and the community in different ways to live, grow and stay green.

Students in Global Studies 460: Independent Study will host a series of events for the summit, including a kick-off concert and silent auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Smaug, Kryzsko Commons. The event will include performances by Tanner Brethorst, Jaybone Bell and Friends and Gravy Train.

The Summit continues Friday, April 11, with student presentations and a photography exhibit from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Science Laboratory Center Atrium.

On Saturday, April 12, the Summit will host Reading to Sprouts from 10 a.m. to noon in the Science Laboratory Center Atrium, followed by the film “PlanEat” at 2 p.m. in Science Laboratory Center, room 120, and Sustain-A-Bowl, a look at agroecology and free samples of local, healthy and sustainable food, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Alumni House.

This is the second Climate Summit at WSU. The first Summit grew out of concern for biodiversity conservation and environmental rights with a travel study led by professor Linda D’Amico.
