The Winona State University Women’s Black Katt Rugby Team won its first ever National DII Championship Dec. 7-8 in Lake Myrtle, Fla.
The team started out by defeating Kutztown 52-17 in the semifinal match. The championship game was held the next day and saw the Black Katts defeat Notre Dame 28-14.
The WSU team has been a finalist in the national competition for the past two years, with this being the first year as champions.
Recognition was also given to individual members of the team. Senior Holly Vassar was awarded MVP and All Tournament. Also on the All Tournament team were players Heather Kohl, Georgia Porter, Lyndsey Bucki, Kathryn Zahn and Rachel Hunter. Senior Emilee Burkhalter received the Sportsperson award.
