Community Service

Winona State University has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

This year marks the fifth consecutive year the university has been named to the Honor Roll and the third time WSU has received the designation “with distinction.” WSU is one of only 100 schools nationwide selected to receive the recognition of Honor Roll with Distinction.

In 2011-12, more than 5,300 WSU students participated in a total of 184,442 hours of volunteer service in the community. Students worked with a variety of organizations and populations, including YWCA’s Ophelia House, college students with disabilities, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health, Catholic Charities, Frozen River Film Festival and Winona Health Foundation.

Community Service Honor Roll honorees are chosen based on a series of criteria, including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

The honor roll is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
