Winona State University will offer two new continuing education courses designed especially for K-12 educators this summer. One course will help teachers improve their educational technology skills; the other will provide tools to teach about the Mississippi River.

The K-12 Digital Teacher and Learner Series, offered completely online, begins June 16. The course is designed to orient the educator to the world of digital teaching and learning and was developed by Lois Cox, director of the Southeast Minnesota Virtual Academy. According to Cox, “Educators can no longer choose to use technology tools in their teaching. The question is where to start and what will enhance student achievement.”

Participants may register for one or more of the stand-alone modules, or register for the entire series. The topics of the six modules in the series are: “Developing 21st Century Digital Skills”; “The Effective Digital Education System”; “Digital Teacher Skills”; “Developing the Digital Community”; “Digitizing Your Content”; and “The Ethics of Digital Teaching.”

Our Mississippi: Educator Workshop is a one-day program that will give teachers the opportunity to explore a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching about the Upper Mississippi River, utilizing a comprehensive curriculum developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Our Mississippi: Educator Workshop provides teachers with a mix of classroom, self-directed, and collaborative lessons and activities.

The workshop is designed for elementary teachers in grades 5-6, with applications for upper and lower grades. It is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 on the WSU Winona campus. Facilitated by Dan Cottrell, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the workshop will feature guest presenters Ed Lagace and Cindy Samples from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Registration includes all materials, refreshments and lunch.

Continuing Education Units (CEU) offered through the Winona State University Outreach and Continuing Education Department are available for the K-12 Digital Teacher and Learner Series and Our Mississippi: Educator Workshop. These courses are among many non-credit/CEU learning opportunities available online and in-person at WSU.
