John PaulsonWinona State University instructor John Paulson will perform as part of the John Paulson Jazz Sextet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Century High School Auditorium, 2525 Viola Road NE, in Rochester.

Opening for the group will be the Century High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Amanda Kaus.

The John Paulson Jazz Sextet will feature two of the top jazz soloists in the Twin Cities area: trumpeter Adam Meckler and trombonist Scott Agster. Meckler and Agster will perform a mix of varied contemporary jazz styles arranged by group members especially for this performance. Also included in the JP Sextet are: drummer Rich MacDonald, director of jazz studies and percussion at WSU; pianist Larry Price, jazz instructor at WSU and freelance artist; and bassist Eric Graham, free-lance musician and teacher at Century College in Minneapolis.

Leader and tenor saxophonist John Paulson is an adjunct instructor at Saint Mary’s and Winona State universities in Winona. In the last 15 years, he has produced four commercial jazz CDs and done five Master class CDs for the Saxophone Journal. His CDs have received airplay and excellent reviews throughout the Midwest. Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 general admission and $5 for seniors and students.

The concert is produced in cooperation with the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Inc. through funding from the Minnesota State legislature.
