Winona State University will host an art exhibit titled “Abstrunkt” through Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Paul Watkins Art Gallery.

The exhibit features the works of guest artists Nomi Lubin, Vincent Hawkins, and Carla Knopp, and is curated by former WSU art history professor Vittorio Colaizzi.

Abstrunkt complicates the abstraction art form with a capital “A.” These artists work within and around abstraction, demonstrating imagination and impulses playing over materials and associations.

Lubin studied painting and drawing at The New York Studio School for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. She connects to the world in a meaningful way through the intimate and individual focus of her art.

Knopp is an exploratory painter from the Midwest. She graduated from the Herron School of Art at Indiana University-Purdue University. Her work reflects a dually-focused purpose from both personally-derived expressionism and formal experimentation.

Hawkins is a painter living and working in London. He has exhibited extensively in the United Kingdom, including the Royal Academy of Art in London. His works, seemingly playful and intuitive, reward the attentive viewer as their qualities give way to painterly rigor and sophistication.

There will be a reception at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 in the Watkins Gallery lobby, and an artist’s talk at 5 p.m. in Science Learning Center 120.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Wednesdays 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
