Dear WSU Community,

As I reflect on yesterday’s tragic shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., I’m saddened not only by the loss of life, but by the violation of this fellow institution’s sense of safety and community. Our campuses are places for learning and sharing of knowledge, and when this type of senseless violence invades our borders and threatens our way of life, it’s an affront to all of us in the greater educational community.

My commitment to the safety and security of our campus and community is as strong as ever, and I ask that each day we all make a commitment to ensure that every member of our community is able to feel safe and can fully focus on learning and on improving our world.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, faculty, staff, families and community in Roseburg. I ask that each of you take a moment of silence today to remember those who were lost and those who are grieving.

Sincerely,

Scott R. Olson
President
