In August we anxiously awaited the arrival of several students from Egypt. The turmoil in their country threatened to keep them from arriving for the first day of class. Thankfully, they all arrived safely and have settled into the academic year routine here at WSU. International students are special to us, so we are very pleased to welcome 169 new students this fall, representing 39 countries. These students are cultural ambassadors who teach the Winona State community and the people of southeastern Minnesota to challenge stereotypes and gain greater appreciation for diverse cultures. As cross cultural scholars, our international students commit to participating in at least four outreach projects annually. Beyond their influence in our region, I believe that students who return home carry a deeper understanding of our culture. Having WSU graduates all over the world creates a ripple effect; gradually they influence others and these connections bring us all closer.
