The Winona State University Digital Humanities Speaker Series will host “Formalism, Realism, and Phenomenology in Visual Media Arts” with Francisco Ricardo at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, Stark Hall, room 103.

Throughout the 20th century, visual arts underwent significant transformations in content, medium and relationship to viewers. Ricardo will explore three main lines of development—the formalist, the realist and the phenomenological—in different expressive modalities as film, photography and sculpture.

Ricardo is a media philosopher, author, musician, theorist and filmmaker. He is also the founding editor of the book series International Texts in Critical Media Aesthetics, published by Bloomsbury. After teaching art theory at Rhode Island School of Design for several years, he decided instead to show new media art through the medium of film.
