The Department of Theatre & Dance at Winona State University (WSU) will host “Maricón (Faggot)” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, in the Memorial 300 Dance Studio.

The performance will serve as WSU student Pedro Lander’s senior dance capstone. The performance focuses on underlying oppression in religion, gender biases, homophobia, and various cultural problems. “Maricón (Faggot)” is a political reaction to Lander’s personal experiences growing up. The title conveys Lander’s desire to reclaim a derogatory term that has been used by family, ‘friends’ and people around him.

Lander is collaborating in the creation process with the cast, composed of Robert Deering, Naiara Doherty García, Anna Frankowski, Rina Namiwa, Sydney Swanson and Sibat Itebar, who also designed the production’s poster. Sidney Junk will serve as stage manager and lighting designer. The performance will feature original music produced by Joyce Liza Rada Lindsey. WSU Dance Program Director Gretchen Cohenour is working as Lander’s mentor for the performance.

This event is free and open to the public with limited seating.
