The Winona State University Department of Music will host an elementary music education workshop, “Bringing the Music and Dance of West Africa into the Music Classroom: Developing a Pedagogy for World Music,” from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in Performing Arts Center room 159.
Participants will learn how to incorporate the music and dance of Ghana, West Africa, into their classroom. The workshop will include traditional singing, games and dances, as well as authentic instruments to accompany songs. Teachers will learn pedagogical strategies to help incorporate West African music into their classroom.
Workshop clinician Karen Howard specializes in children’s music culture, ethnomusicology, creative and folk dance traditions, and early childhood music education. Howard has presented at various events, including those for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
