Nita Skylar 5-30-13 - Harlos (4)A documentary produced by Winona State University students as part of the 2013 Navajo Oral History project has been selected for exhibition at the 2013 LA Skins Fest: A Native American Film Festival in late November.

WSU alumni Skylar Ogren, of Winona, Minn., and Whitney Harlos, of Rochester, Minn., worked alongside Dine College student Lyndzey Barney and alumna Revaline Nez, to produce a film featuring traditional Navajo rug weaver Nita Nez. Done in the Navajo language with English subtitles, the documentary describes her life as a Rug Weaver, how she learned the craft from her mother and grandmother, and how she is passing the tradition on to her daughters and grandchildren. In the film, she shows how she sets up her loom as well as a demonstration of the weaving.

All four students will meet Nita Nez, and the three faculty members who assisted in the project: Winona State professor and project advisor Tom Grier, graduate assistant for the project Robbie Christiano and Dine College professor Miranda Haskie in Los Angeles to present the film.
