Winona State University and the Great River Shakespeare Festival will partner on the second annual Summer Shakespeare Symposia July 14 and 21.
The symposia are academic conversations that bring together Shakespeare scholars and GRSF practitioners. The symposia aim to put the 2012 season productions of “King Lear” and “Two Gentlemen of Verona” in literary and performance context.
The symposium on “King Lear” will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, in Stark 103, and feature speakers Andrew Higl, assistant professor of English at WSU, and Jo Hittner, assistant professor of counselor education at WSU. The symposium on “Two Gentleman of Verona” will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21, in Stark 103, and feature speaker Jane Carducci, professor of English at WSU.
The symposia will feature a panel of scholars from WSU and other regional institutions, the director of the GRSF production, and members of the professional acting company. The director will discuss approaches to the play, while the actors will examine scenes from various approaches, giving the audience a glimpse into how theatrical meaning can be shaped by different understandings of the play. There will be a moderated discussion with the audience, led by Andrew Carlson, GRSF company member and education director. The event will end at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for each symposium and include a catered lunch by the Blue Heron Coffeehouse. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 507-474-7900.
