Winona State University music faculty David Dies will have his work performed live on Chicago’s WFMT radio station at 8 p.m. Oct. 7.
A livestream of the show will be available at www.wfmt.com.
The live broadcast will be “the largest and most prestigious presentation” of Dies’ professional compositions, he said.
Composer and educator Dies was approached last spring by Cory Tiffin of the Anaphora, a classical music ensemble from Chicago, about performing some of his work. Dies’ compositions will be performed during a few of Anaphora’s concerts as well as their live performance on WFMT radio station.
Prior to the performances Dies had to write a new arrangement of Ravel’s “Deux Melodies Hebraques” for the specific instruments involved including: flute, oboe, viola, cello and mezzo-soprano.
The live radio broadcast will include many preparations, including several days of rehearsal with the ensemble as well as a full concert performance in front of a live audience. Finally the ensemble will perform Dies’ work and the rest of their concert repertoire live in the studios of the WFMT radio station.
Dies said, “I’m thrilled to be working with (renowned mezzo-soprano) Julia Bentley and the instrumentalists of Anaphora, and to be reaching an audience as large as those who tune in” to the radio station.
The Anaphora performance will include excerpts from Dies’ chamber opera, his song cycle for soprano and chamber ensemble, and the new Ravel arrangement.
