For Rico C. Deleon, Winona State University has been more than a college experience — it’s been a journey of growth, resilience, and purpose. Originally from Chippewa Falls, Wis., Rico came to Winona State because of its welcoming community and the opportunity to play the sport he loves.
“I chose Winona State because I loved the location and was fortunate to receive a football scholarship,” he said. “It felt like the perfect place to challenge myself both academically and athletically.”
Rico will graduate this fall with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sports Leadership. His passion for criminal justice runs deep.
“I’ve always loved everything about this field — the idea of serving the community and being a protector, upholding the law, and standing up for those who can’t protect themselves,” he shared.
Looking back, Rico says his favorite Winona State memory is Homecoming.
“There’s no better feeling than playing in a football game that brings people together — helping them forget life’s distractions and focus on love, family, and football.”
His time at Winona State wasn’t without challenges.
“Academically, I struggled at times, and my time management wasn’t always the best,” he admitted. “But learning to take control of my choices and manage my time helped me grow and succeed. Sometimes, hitting rock bottom was the only way to climb to the top.”
Through it all, Rico learned an important lesson: success requires support.
“We are nothing on our own — we must uplift, love, and believe in each other to reach our full potential,” he said.
After graduation, Rico plans to pursue a career as either a police officer in Minnesota or a college football coach.
“I’m passionate about both, and I’m confident that either choice will allow me to make a positive impact and be successful.”
His advice to future Warriors?
“Never let your heart or your dreams fade. Chase your passions and pursue your goals with faith and determination. Be authentic, be yourself, and never doubt your dreams — that’s the version of you the world needs to see.”
