For the 22nd year in a row, Winona State University has earned a spot on the Princeton Review’s coveted “Best in the Midwest” list. It is the only university in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system to make the list.
Among the 24 campuses across Minnesota and Wisconsin featured in the rankings, Winona State is one of only four regional comprehensive universities to make the cut.
The Princeton Review bases its annual rankings on surveys of more than 168,000 students nationwide. These surveys explore eight key areas of student life, including academics, campus life, extracurriculars, quality of life, and the social scene.
For Maya Lauderdale ’27, a Winona State I-Design major, what distinguishes the university as “Best in the Midwest” is its welcoming campus atmosphere and strong sense of community:
“The campus is the perfect size — you run into friends all the time, but you’re also always meeting new people. It feels close-knit without being too small.”
Winona State University President Kenneth Janz points to the university’s strong academics, student support, and career success as what truly sets Winona State apart.
“Being named ‘Best in the Midwest’ for 22 consecutive years is a reflection of the transformative experience we offer at Winona State,” said Janz. “From exceptional student support and financial aid opportunities to high-impact academics and a 97% job placement rate, our outcomes speak for themselves. We’re proud to be recognized for what truly sets us apart: a community where students thrive, graduate with purpose, and go on to shape the future.”
The “2026 Best Colleges: Region by Region” guide includes 631 colleges nationwide, with 150 from the Midwest region. Institutions selected are considered “academically outstanding and well worth consideration” for students seeking the right college fit.
