For Tyler Peil, Winona State University isn’t just a place where he earned two degrees, it’s a community that embraced him, challenged him, and encouraged him to show up as the best version of himself.

Peil was initially drawn to Winona State for its strong education program and the small class sizes that would help foster meaningful relationships with professors. But what truly resonated with him was the welcoming campus atmosphere and the opportunities to get involved.

“Beyond education, I saw that WSU values inclusivity, student voice, and leadership development — things I value in my daily life as well,” Peil said.

Throughout his college experience, Peil made a point to be an active participant in shaping the campus community. Whether through networking or taking on leadership roles in Student Senate and various on-campus jobs, he felt empowered to make a lasting impact.

“I have felt like I’ve been able to make a real impact on campus with peers, faculty, staff, and other students,” he said. “As I’ve shaped them, I can say for a fact they have shaped me.”

As an On Track Academic Coach, Study Skills Tutor, and Program Coordinator, Peil worked closely with students navigating academic challenges — offering personalized coaching, connecting them with resources, and helping them build the skills needed to succeed. These roles not only deepened his understanding of student support systems but also reinforced his commitment to empowering others through education and mentorship.

“In my roles of student activism and student support, I’ve learned that real impact comes from listening, understanding diverse perspectives, and being willing to step up when it matters,” he said. “WSU showed me that leadership isn’t about yourself or about the title, but instead it’s about showing up, building community, and working towards something greater than oneself.”

After graduation, Peil will continue supporting youth development through an internship with Skyhawks Sports, where he’ll work with young athletes over the summer. As he looks ahead, he brings with him the skills, insights, and passion shaped by years of academic and community engagement at WSU.

From day one, I had people who believed in me, programs to help me succeed, and open spaces in leadership roles that allowed me to find my voice. WSU gave me the chance to grow, lead, and leave a legacy. I’m walking away with more than just my degrees. I’m leaving with lifelong relationships, meaningful experiences, and the confidence to take on whatever comes next.
