The Winona State University Office of International Programs will host the sixth annual CHINA Town Hall at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in Maxwell Hall, Room 106.
CHINA Town Hall is a national day of programming designed to provide Americans the opportunity to discuss the issues of China’s rapid development and Sino-American relations with leading experts. It involves 50 cities throughout the United States.
The event will feature local speaker Joseph J. Borich, president of the Washington State China Relations Council, at 7:15 p.m. and a live webcast from Washington, D.C., with speaker Gary F. Locke, United States Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China at 8 p.m. Stephen A. Orlins, president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, will moderate the webcast.
Borich, a Minnesota native and graduate of the University of South Dakota, has worked in the Foreign Service since 1972 and has served under every president from Nixon to Clinton in a China-related capacity. He will speak on the future of U.S.-China relations in the context of the previous century having been the American Century. He will also address the recent repositioning of the U.S. as an Asia-Pacific nation and the opportunities and challenges this presents for the Midwest.
Locke graduated from Yale and Boston University, and has worked as Secretary of Commerce and as Governor of Washington before being nominated 10th Ambassador of the U.S. to China by President Obama.
The event is free and open to the public. Check-in and refreshments will be available at 6:30 p.m. followed by an introduction at 7 p.m.
