The Winona State University Department of Music will present the jazz recital “Rich MacDonald and Friends” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, Performing Arts Center Main Stage.

“Rich MacDonald and Friends” is a joint venture with WSU professor Rich MacDonald, and Greg Balfany and Karyn Quinn from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The trio work together in various jazz settings around the region in groups like the quartet “Border Patrol,” the 16-piece “La Crosse Jazz Orchestra,” and the sextet “Optimism.”

Dave Marck will join the trio on the piano for this recital. Marck currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he performs regularly as a jazz pianist and serves as associate musical director for the National Dance Institute.

The quartet of MacDonald, Balfany, Quinn and March will perform a number of jazz standards with their own unique arrangements. Featured selections will include: Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia,” Cole Porter’s “I Love You,” Kenny Barron’s “Voyage,” and a new spin on the classic Johnny Green tune “Body and Soul.”

The quartet will be joined by WSU jazz faculty members Larry Price on piano, Ray Dretske on tenor saxophone and John Paulson, also on tenor saxophone.

Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for WSU Friends of Jazz, an organization that supports the WSU jazz program by funding initiatives for students, including equipment purchasing, guest artists, WSU music group recordings, student tours and other jazz events.

The concert will repeat with slight variations at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Annett Recital Hall on the UW-La Crosse campus.
