Students from Jefferson Elementary were at WSU on Oct. 6 and 7 to learn about trees.

Winona State University’s College of Education is partnering with the third grade class of Jefferson Elementary School for a new project with EDUC 335, Elementary Science Methods, as part of the STEM program.

Jefferson students will be partnered with WSU education students for a semester-long tree project. Each WSU student will have two or three third grade “tree buddies,” and each group will focus on a particular tree in the WSU Arboretum. Third grade students will be given Tree Journals and will study their trees throughout the semester.

The Jefferson students will meet on the WSU campus once and use photos, emails and other technology to update the data over the course of the semester.

Jefferson teachers participating in this project include Amber Barnard, Toni McDevitt and Kristin Schultz.
