The Winona State University Sociology Department has been approved to host a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), Omicron of Minnesota, the International Sociology Honor Society.
AKD represents social research for the purpose of service. AKD seeks to recognize and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and other social and intellectual activities that will lead to improvement in the human condition. There are over 640 chapters of the Society and more than 110,000 lifetime members.
Benefits of being a member of AKD include: AKD-provided honoraria for initiation speakers, funds for student travel to regional sociological meetings, potential salary benefits for AKD membership, and access to purchase honor cords and pins for graduation.
Students who are interested in becoming a member of the chapter must be a sociology major or minor, or must demonstrate a serious interest in sociology at WSU. Applicants must be junior or senior status, have an overall GPA of 3.3 or above, a sociology GPA of 3.0 or above, and have taken at least four sociology courses at WSU.
