The editors of Brighthorse Books have selected Winona State University English Professor Elizabeth Oness’s novel, Leaving Milan, for the 2014 Brighthorse Prize.
Leaving Milan is Oness’s first novel set in the Upper Midwest and will be published in December 2014.
Oness’s work has appeared in The Hudson Review, Crazyhorse, Glimmer Train, The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review, and other literary magazines. Oness’s stories have received awards such as an O. Henry Prize and a Nelson Algren Award. In 2000, Oness’s story collection, Articles of Faith, won the Iowa Short Fiction Prize and was published by the University of Iowa Press. Her first novel, Departures, was published by Penguin in 2004. Oness’s collection of poems, Fallibility, was released from New Rivers Press in the Fall of 2009.
Oness teaches composition, literature, and fiction writing at WSU. She is also the marketing director for a literary fine press, Sutton Hoo Press.
