Winona State University’s Department of Composite Materials Engineering will present “Design, Manufacture & Testing of Composite Bicycles” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Stark Hall room 103.
WSU alumnus Tim Hartung will lead the seminar and discuss statics, vibrational dynamics, finite elements analysis and fluid dynamics as they relate to specific bike design characteristics. He will also overview Trek’s domestic frame manufacturing process, including tooling design, lay-up design and fabrication technique, and discuss the process of testing frames and parts to achieve the lightest, most durable road frames. Many bike models and other numerous composite parts that Tim has designed will be on display for people to preview.
Hartung graduated from the Composite Materials Engineering (CME) program at WSU in December 2008. He is the lead design engineer of composite road frames in Trek’s Road and Speed Department. He is responsible for leading/supporting the activities of composite road frame development, including production of composite road frames and their various assembly parts. Throughout his career, he has led several critical bike models to the high performance bike market, including the 2013 Madone, the 2013 Domane and the 2015 Boone. These bike models and other composite parts designed by Hartung will be on display at the event.
The event is free and open to the public. A brief reception will precede the ceremony at 3:15 p.m.
