Winona State University will host author Steve Almond as part of the John S. Lucas Great River Reading Series at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 in the Science Laboratory Center (SLC) 120. The event is free and open to the public.
Steve Almond, author of Candy Freak, God Bless America, and Against Football; One Fan’s Reluctant Manifesto, was raised in Palo Alto, Calif., and was a newspaper reporter in Texas and Florida before writing his first book, the story collection My Life in Heavy Metal. His second book, Candy Freak, was a New York Times bestseller, was named the Booksense Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year, and won the American Library Association Alex Award.
Almond’s recently published book Against Football was hailed by Kirkus Reviews as, “A provocative, thoughtful examination of an ‘astonishingly brutal’ sport…Comic, compassionate, and thought-provoking.”
