The Winona State University Department of Theatre & Dance 2014-15 production season will follow the theme “Sustaining the Myth of the American Dream,” to coincide with WSU’s university theme, “Sustainable Futures.”
The productions will revolve around dramatic and comical themes encapsulating an ironic, optimistic, cynical, hopeful and humorous perspective of the sustainability of the mythical American Dream in the American heartland.
The season will kick off Oct. 15 with “Assassins,” a musical revue by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman that brings together a fraternity of presidential assassins and would-be assassins in American history. It examines success, failure and questionable drive for power and celebrity in American society. “Assassins” is directed by Professor Jim Williams with musical direction by Professor Harry Mechell, and will run Oct. 15-18 in the Vivian Fusillo Theatre in WSU’s Performing Arts Center.
Running Nov. 19-23 in the PAC Dorothy B. Magnus Studio Theatre, “Leaving Iowa” is a family-friendly comedy about a writer who travels across Iowa in search of a place to leave his father’s ashes while revisiting his childhood memories. The play is written by Tim Clue and Spike Mantan, and directed by Professor Heather Williams-Williams.
“Dancescape 2015” is an annual production that showcases original choreography and performances by students and professors directed by WSU Dance Program Director Gretchen Cohenour. Performances will run Feb. 12-14 in the PAC Vivian Fusillo Theatre.
“24-Hour Theatre” is a student-produced event in which students write, direct, act and perform in three short productions within 24 hours. The culmination of their efforts will be initiated at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27, and presented 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the PAC Dorothy B. Magnus Studio Theatre.
“August: Osage County” is a dark comedy about a dysfunctional family that, in the wake of tragedy, must confront its past and present. “August: Osage County” is written by Tracy Letts and will be directed by Jim Williams. Performances will run April 15-18.
The annual “Senior Dance Concert” will close out the THAD 2014-15 season April 27-28 in the PAC Vivian Fusillo Theatre.
Auditions for “Assassins” and “Leaving Iowa” will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26-28, in the Dorothy B. Magnus Theatre and the Vivian Fusillo Theatre. “Dancescape 2015” auditions will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2-3, in Memorial 300 Dance Studio.
