Winona State University will screen the film “The Last Temptation of Christ” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Stark Hall Auditorium.
Based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, “The Last Temptation of Christ” is a fictional take on the life of Jesus, directed by Martin Scorsese. The film explores the human aspects of Jesus and in doing so it dramatizes the struggle between earthly desires and higher callings.
Since its premiere in 1988, the film has sparked many public debates and has faced censorship in the United States and abroad. However, it has also drawn praise from film critics. “The Last Temptation of Christ” was named one of the best films of 1988 by the National Board of Review and it was featured in Roger Ebert’s book “The Great Movies.” More recently, “The Last Temptation of Christ” was screened at the Wells Cathedral in the United Kingdom as part of the 2014 Bath Film Festival.
“The Last Temptation of Christ” is rated R by the MPAA.
The screening is sponsored by WSU’s English, mass communication, and sociology departments, Darrell W. Krueger Library and Sounds of Cinema, a radio program broadcast on 89.5 KQAL FM.
The event is free and open to the public.
