More than 50 Winona State University international students will teach area children about their home countries through WSU’s Kids First Program at Maplewood Townhomes throughout the spring semester.
Kids First is an afterschool program staffed by WSU student volunteers. It focuses on providing homework assistance and recreational activities for children of diverse backgrounds. In 2013 Kids First celebrated five years of helping children.
The center is located in the activity building of the Maplewood Townhomes, a low-income housing project on the west end of Winona. There are 80 units in the neighborhood and more than 200 children. Kids First serves more than 100 of these children, with a daily attendance of around 50 kids.
