Winona State University will offer the Senior University course “Short, Wild & Woolly History of English Language” beginning Thursday, Feb. 6.
The class will be taught by David Marshall, Ph.D. It will cover the history of the English language, the events that affected it and other languages that influenced it. Sections covered will be the pre-historical period, old English (449-1100), middle English (1100-1500), early modern English (1500-1800) and modern English, focusing on changes encountered while growing from a group of wandering Paleolithic tribes to today’s worldwide dominant language.
Marshall has taught this course in a lengthened semester form for 37 years. He has a Ph.D. in linguistics from New York University and a handful of publications in the field. His latest was a chapter on the changes of English spelling and their causes.
The class will meet for five weeks from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27 and March 6, in Maxwell 272.

The class is open to the public and costs $40.
Senior University WSU consists of four to five-week, non-credit courses with no tests, grades, papers or homework. Courses are taught by WSU faculty, retirees and community members. The courses promote continued life-long learning and personal, intellectual and cultural enrichment.
