Winona State University’s Gender-Based Violence Program will receive the 2013 “Creating a Safer Community Award” given by The Women’s Resource Center of Winona at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Women’s Resource Center.
The Gender-Based Violence Program is the result of the Sexual Violence Advisory Committee’s efforts to improve campus safety and gender equality at WSU. The Gender-Based Violence Program currently has the GBV Helpline (507-457-5610) and works with students to become peer advocates.
This year, the sexual Violence Advisory Committee and the Gender-Based Violence Program received a Department of Justice Grant to build and strengthen the Gender-Based Violence Program and continue to promote a safer community for students. The Gender-Based Violence Program also hosted the first annual Speak Out Against Violence to raise consciousness about violence and its impact on individuals and the community.
Kent Russell, the Goodview Police Chief, will also be recognized as the individual recipient of the “Creating a Safer Community Award.”
The recognition event is free and open to the public.
