Winona State University will host “The Art of Resistance” with Bakari Kitwana and Hakri R. Madhubuti of Rap Sessions on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
A student workshop,“Hip-Hop Activism in the Obama Era,” will be led by Kitwana at 3 p.m. in Kryzsko Commons, dining rooms E, F and G.
Madhubuti will host a poetry reading at 4 p.m. in the Student Activity Center, Kryzsko Commons.
At 7 p.m. Kitwana and Madhubuti will present “An Intergenerational Dialogue Between the Civil Rights and Hip-Hop Generations.”
The 50th Anniversary of the March On Washington is this fall and Rap Sessions will examine the role of art in activism across several generations.
These presentations are free and open to the public.
Kitwana is a journalist and activist whose commentary has appeared on CNN, the O’Reilly Factor, BET and has been heard on NPR. Kitwana’s book The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture is used in more than 100 college and university classrooms. His most recent work is Hip-Hop Activism in the Obama Era . For the past ten years, Kitwana has spoken about hip-hop and youth culture at some of the nation’s leading universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia and others.
Kitwana is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia College’s Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in Arts and the Media. He has been the Artist-in-Residence at the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago , senior editor of newsone.com and a consultant on hip-hop for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the editorial director of the Third World Press .
Madhubuti is an activist, poet, educator and author. He has been active with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, the Congress of Racial Equality, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Black Power Movement during the 60s and 70s. He is also the founder and publisher of Third World Press, which is the largest independent Black-owned press in the nation today.
