The Cal Fremling Floating Interpretive Center & Classroom

Winona State University will soon set sail on the Mississippi River for an exciting new journey aboard The Cal Fremling Floating Interpretive Center and Classroom.

This floating classroom will be the first education vessel of its kind owned and operated by a university. The 49-passenger, 17 x 60-foot boat will serve as a resource for the region, hosting both educational and social events centered on teaching and learning about the Mississippi River.

The boat is named in honor of the late Cal Fremling, WSU professor emeritus of biology. Fremling was a noted educator, scientist and river enthusiast.

The project represents the university’s commitment to education, conservation and preservation of the Mississippi River, which serves as an unparalleled resource for educational, economic, recreational, social and environmental opportunities.

The Cal Fremling Floating Interpretive Center and Classroom will support hands-on learning opportunities for WSU students, faculty, staff and community members in such diverse areas as history, environment, literature, natural and social sciences, visual and performing arts, and economics of the Mississippi River.

WSU will partner with Visit Winona for community-based events, and rental opportunities for community organizations and businesses will be available.

The WSU Foundation is working with SkipperLiner of La Crosse, Wis., on the design of the boat. The project is being funded by WSU, the WSU Foundation and private support.
