The Winona State University program Kids First is celebrating five years of helping children.
Kids First is an afterschool program staffed by WSU students. The center is located in the activity building of the Maplewood Townhomes, a low-income housing project on the west end of Winona. There are 80 units in the neighborhood and more than 200 children.
Kids First serves more than 100 of these children, with a daily attendance of around 50 kids. Currently 170 WSU volunteers donate two hours a week to the center. Volunteers are primarily education and special education majors. Nursing students have also been active in providing health education activities for the kids.
Kids First is open 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. The first hour is devoted to homework and literacy building, and the remainder of the time is open for recreation activities.
