Winona State University will host a public lecture with Michael Kimmel, author of WSU’s 2012-13 Common Book “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Somsen Auditorium.
A book signing will follow the lecture, and Kimmel will participate in several other events during his March 5 visit to the Winona State campus.
Prior to his evening presentation, Kimmel will participate in a panel discussion on “Researching and Writing about Gender” from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the New Center Conference Room. Panelists include Rafael Narvaez (professor of sociology) and April Hendon (professor of English). Jennifer Chernega (professor of sociology) will moderate the discussion.
Kimmel will also visit Tamara Berg’s Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies class 2-3:20 p.m. in Somsen Auditorium. The class will be open to the public, and visitors should be prepared to discuss “Guyland.” RSVP to Berg at tberg@winona.edu if you plan to attend.
Kimmel is a prominent gender studies scholar and has authored and edited more than 20 books in the field. He is a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has also worked as a consultant for corporations and public-sector organizations around the world on gender equality issues.
“Guyland” explores the complex and often troubling social world in which boys ages 16 to 26 are expected to make the transition to manhood. The book is based on extensive sociological and historical research as well as Kimmel’s interviews and conversations with hundreds of young men and women across the country.
