For one year, a fleet of small, six-wheeled robots have rolled across campus and through the heart of the city delivering meals, sparking curiosity, and redefining convenience at Winona State University.
Through a partnership between Chartwells Dining and Starship Technologies, Winona State launched its robot delivery service to provide “an affordable, environmentally friendly, and fun option for food delivery service in the heart of the city.” Whether you’re a student, employee, or Winona resident within the geographical bounds, the robots deliver both on and off campus.
In just one year, the impact has been significant for Winona State — the first university in the Minnesota State system to launch Starship. The robots have completed more than 2,100 deliveries, traveled over 1,500 miles, and safely navigated 14,000 road crossings. What began as an innovative idea has quickly become a part of everyday campus life.
“Starship’s autonomous delivery robots make WSU a tech-forward, future-ready campus by bringing advanced machine learning technology directly into everyday student life,” says Grace Waller for Chartwells.
The innovative technology has also expanded accessibility.
“Starship robots significantly increase accessibility for students, offering a convenient option for those with mobility limitations or tight schedules,” campus representatives shared. Many students have said the robots are an easy way to get food in between classes with a busy schedule or when they’re sick in bed. With the ability to order quickly and have meals delivered directly to residence halls like Kirkland and Haake, the service fits seamlessly into student routines.
When it comes to favorites, Panda Express leads the way. The No. 1 most requested item was the Panda Express Bowl and No. 2 is the Panda Express Plate with cream cheese rangoons coming in a close third.
Winona State’s robot delivery service represents more than just a new dining option — it reflects innovation, accessibility, and a campus community ready to embrace the future. As the robots continue to travel miles and deliver thousands more meals, they’re also delivering something bigger: a glimpse of what’s next for Winona State.
