Winona State University offers new students a unique chance to jumpstart their college experience with Warrior Expeditions, a three-day pre-orientation program designed to welcome students to campus and the Winona area through outdoor adventure.
Part of Winona State’s First-Year Experiences programs, Warrior Expeditions helps incoming students ease into college life by offering them a head start both socially and academically. Held just before the semester begins, this program allows students to move in early, earn college credit, and build friendships before classes even start.
“I met all my current close friends on the trip and absolutely loved them.” Student Ali Storz had mentioned that prior to attending the expedition, she had not known any of the other students. “It was such an amazing experience. It also helped me step outside my comfort-zone while in a new environment as well.”
By taking part this adventure, incoming students are introduced to the Driftless region by exploring the Mississippi River Valley through camping, hiking, rock climbing, and paddling – all while getting to know fellow students in a fun, supportive environment.
“I really got to see and experience all the nature here and ways we can explore and enjoy it. I may not have felt the same without the expedition.” Said Madelyn Brockberg, one of the students who attended in 2024.
Led by current student leaders and staff, the Warrior Expeditions experience gives new students valuable insights into life at Winona State by offering tips, support, and mentorship that set the tone for a successful first year.
Students will even get ahead in their first semester, earning an activity wellness credit before the semester begins.
“It helped to show me that there’s more to Winona than just the campus. It helped me to feel like I belonged to this school” Ava Collins, another student who attended.
“Warrior Expeditions is more than just an adventure — it’s a launchpad for success,” said Mike Henderson, Director of the Outdoor Education and Recreation Center.
