For Rachael Paggen, choosing Winona State University was more than a college decision — it was a family tradition and a personal calling. A native of Shieldsville, Minn., Rachael followed in the footsteps of her brother and sister, drawn to the university’s welcoming atmosphere, scenic campus, and close-knit community.
“It felt like the perfect fit in so many ways,” she said. “I loved the idea of being close to family while still carving out my own college experience.”
Rachael, who graduates with a major in Accounting and a minor in Finance, credits her passion for business to her upbringing. With a father who owns his own business and a mother in sales, she was immersed in conversations about leadership and entrepreneurship from a young age.
But it was a pivotal moment in an introductory accounting class at Winona State that truly set her path in motion.
“After class one day, I talked with my professor about my goals,” she recalled. “She encouraged me to consider accounting as a career and helped me map out my academic journey. That conversation changed everything.”
Throughout her time at Winona State, Rachael embraced every opportunity to grow—academically, professionally, and personally. She found her greatest joy in the connections she made.
“The sense of community here is incredible,” she said. “Professors genuinely care and go out of their way to help you succeed.”
After graduation, Rachael plans to study for the CPA exam and celebrate with a well-earned trip to Greece. In September, she’ll begin her full-time role at Deloitte in Minneapolis in Audit and Assurance. But before diving into her career, she’s prioritizing time with family.
“I’m trying to appreciate every moment,” she said. “We don’t get this time back.”
Her advice to future Warriors? “Get involved. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to fail. College is your time to discover who you are. Be resilient, and keep moving forward.”
