The TRIO program at Winona State University has been awarded two renewed federal grants from the U.S. Department of Education, totaling over $3 million in funding over the next five years.

The renewed grants will sustain and strengthen TRIO’s Student Support Services, which help students navigate the path to college success. Each year, these programs serve 325 students—including first-generation students, income-eligible families, and students with disabilities—by providing tutoring, financial guidance, and mentoring.

The true impact of TRIO shines through the experiences of the students it supports.

For Political Science major Macy Grulkowski ’26, TRIO has been a transformative part of her college journey, helping her overcome her natural shyness and grow into a confident leader.

“TRIO has helped me get out of my shell,” Grulkowski said. “Without TRIO, I would still be afraid to talk to others, and attending class would be difficult.”

“Being in TRIO has changed me in so many ways, but being able to stand in front of others and talk to them is one of my proudest accomplishments,” she continued. “Now, I’m the President of TRIO Student Leaders, constantly collaborating with other students to ensure we provide an environment for everyone.”

Leslie Alvarez ’28, a student in the Law (3+3) program, also credits TRIO with being a major source of encouragement and support throughout her academic journey.

“I’m incredibly proud to be a part of the WSU community,” said Alvarez. “Being here has opened the door to so many amazing opportunities that are truly preparing me for the next steps in life.”

Alvarez shared that she has achieved several important milestones, including serving as the Equity & Inclusive Excellence Chair, making the Dean’s List, and working as a secretary with Legal Affairs.

“These accomplishments hold a special place in my heart because they remind me that even when life gets difficult, it’s never a reason to give up,” she added. “TRIO is a place that not only supports your goals but also encourages you to grow beyond them.”
