Lisa (Walters) Smith, a 2008 graduate of Winona State University, has been named the 2025 National High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by SHAPE America — the Society of Health and Physical Educators. The award recognizes outstanding teaching in physical education and a demonstrated impact on student learning and well-being.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from WSU, along with minors in Coaching and Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE). She currently teaches physical education, health, and DAPE at Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, Minnesota, where she also serves as head softball coach.

Originally a psychology major, Smith shifted her focus to education after a pivotal meeting with WSU faculty member Dr. Gail Grimm, who helped guide her into the College of Education. That encounter, Smith says, was instrumental in shaping her career path. During her time at WSU, she was actively involved in the HOPE and PE student clubs and participated in national professional conferences, gaining valuable field experience and mentorship.

“WSU provided real-world opportunities that prepared me to be successful in the classroom,” Smith said. “The support from professors and hands-on learning experiences made a lasting difference.”

Smith’s teaching is recognized for its student-centered approach, innovative practices, and focus on lifelong wellness. As a teacher and coach, she has helped influence the next generation–some of whom have gone on to attend Winona State themselves.

The university congratulates Smith on this national recognition and celebrates the impact she continues to make in education and youth development.
