For Kennedi Kjellberg, Winona State University stood out from the start.
From her very first campus tour, she felt that Winona State was the kind of place where she could grow – both as a future teacher and as a musician.
“I immediately felt welcome and like my presence was desired at Winona State,” Kjellberg said.
That strong sense of belonging defined her college experience, opening the door to meaningful friendships and memorable opportunities – like in 2024, when she performed with the WSU Wind Ensemble at the Minnesota Music Educators’ Association midwinter clinic, marking a historic first for the university.
“I have met so many wonderful people, and they are what truly got me through the stressful times college can bring. I am eternally grateful for every single person I have come across throughout my journey.”
Late nights, tough courses, and personal challenges tested her along the way. But for Kjellberg, those moments became part of a deeper education.
“I have been through a lot of difficult moments during my time here, both academically and personally, and learning what I need to do to be resilient and come out of the other side of these challenges has been such an important lesson that I can thank WSU for,” she said. “I have achieved things high school Kennedi never would have thought she could do!”
She credits her success to the community that surrounded her.
“Hearing experiences from friends attending other universities, I’ve realized that WSU is truly such a great place to be to succeed,” she said. “The support from faculty, other students, and the university as a whole is unmatched. WSU truly has some of the best resources you could ever ask for when it comes to being successful academically and otherwise.”
After graduation, Kjellberg hopes to return to her roots, finding a teaching position near her hometown of Somerset, Wis., while continuing to pursue music.
As she prepares to graduate, she reflects on her time at Winona State with gratitude and pride.
“I am proud to say that I attended the #1 public university in the state. WSU has truly been making marks throughout the state and beyond,” Kjellberg said. “There have been leaps and bounds from a variety of programs these past few years that make me proud to be a future WSU alum.”
