In celebration of National Chemistry Week and Halloween, Winona State University will present the fifth annual STEM Carnival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Science Laboratory Center Atrium (400 Winona St).
This event is free, open to the public, and will have activities for all ages to enjoy, including science demonstrations, Halloween activities, and a Mad Scientist Show, as well as a Raptor Show featuring live birds, and a Reptile Observation with live reptiles and snakes.
Attendees are welcome to wear Halloween costumes for some extra fun.
The Mad Scientist Show will explore the intersection of physics and chemistry. The experiment consists of dropping a regular pumpkin, followed by dropping a frozen pumpkin that has been filled with liquid nitrogen. The experiment will show different outcomes with the typical “splatter” of a ripe pumpkin and then the “shatter” of a frozen pumpkin as numerous orange chunks fly a great distance through the air.
The Raptor Show will feature an hour-long program of live birds of prey. There will also be a Reptile Observation, in which live reptiles and snakes will be available for viewing and light touch.
Additionally, the carnival will host different crafts and hands-on demonstrations, from slime making, to a smoke cannon, and other STEM activities.
The event is hosted by the WSU Chemistry Club, Environmental Club, Physics Club, Geoscience Club, and the College of Science and Engineering.
