Gloria J. and Randolph W. Miller, of Milliken, Colo., will be recognized by Winona State University with the Distinguished Faculty and Staff Award Friday, Oct. 24, as a part of the university’s Homecoming celebration.

Randy served Winona State for 32 years
, from 1974 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2006. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Manitoba in 1970 and his master’s degree (1971) and Ph.D. (1974) in physical education from the University of Minnesota. His areas of expertise include clinical exercise physiology and methods of rehabilitation in special populations.

During his time at WSU, Randy developed the university’s on-campus cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program, collaborating with local and regional hospitals and clinics to develop clinical practica and internships for students. WSU’s “Randolph W. Miller” Exercise Physiology Laboratory was named in his honor.

In 1999 Randy was inducted into the University of Manitoba’s Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2000 he received the University of Minnesota’s M.A. Mork “Outstanding Educator of the Year Award” from the College of Education and Human Development.

Gloria served as Winona State University’s Alumni Director from 1986 to 2002. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business education in 1983 and her master’s degree in counselor education in 1989. Gloria was an active member in the Winona community, serving in civic organizations and on committees, including terms as president of the United Way of Winona, Sequoia Society, and the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In 2001, she was honored by the Winona Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business, receiving the Athena Award for exceptional service to the community.

In 2000 both Randy and Gloria were recognized with the Homecoming Grand Marshal/Heritage award by Winona State.

The Millers currently split their time between Millicent, Colo., and Port Aransas, Texas. Randy is currently president of both the Home Owners Association and the golf league. Gloria is currently president of the Friends and Newcomers Club and is an active member of the Assistance League.
