REC_Banner_SpringWinona State University will offer the Senior University course “Making Sense of Modern Art” beginning Monday, March 10.

Making Sense of Modern Art takes aim at the often bewildering history of modern art and its relentless flow of styles. Dispensing with a strictly chronological treatment of modernism, this selective approach emphasizes major styles/artists and major themes with respect to art content, artistic form and expression. Discussion centers on the fundamental question of why artists, starting in the 1880s, abandoned representational styles in favor of alternative conceptions of what the work of art is.

WSU Professor Emeritus Dominic Ricciotti will teach the course. Ricciotti specializes in modern art history. Prior to his retirement in 2008, he taught courses in modern art history for 36 years, including 23 years as a faculty member at WSU.

The class will meet for five sessions, from 1-3 p.m. March 10, 17, 24 and 31. There will also be an optional field trip.

The class is open to the public and costs $40. There will be an additional cost for the optional field trip.

Registration forms are available from the WSU Retiree Center, 507-457-5565 or online at http://winona.augusoft.net. Early registration is recommended.
