SochiWithLove

The Winona State University community will participate in the “To Sochi with Love” campaign at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Harriet Johnson Auditorium in Somsen Hall.

The event is being organized by Full Spectrum: Winona State University’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance as a way for the whole campus to send love and support to those who need it, said WSU senior Garrett Bowling.

“‘To Sochi With Love’ is a solidarity campaign to offer messages of love, support and friendship,” said WSU alumna Morgan Jacobus. “At the same time, we’re reminding Russian officials that the world is watching.”

Jacobus, who served as president of Full Spectrum during her time at WSU, currently works with the Family Equality Council, a national American advocacy organization committed to securing family equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer parents, guardians and allies.

According to the Family Equality Council, which started the campaign, the Russian Parliament has passed numerous laws that affect the LGBTQ community. These laws ban “homosexual propaganda” as well as adoption by same-sex couples and by single individuals from countries where same-sex marriage is legal.
