Winona State University CLASP lecture series will host Professor Nathan Moore for the presentation “’When Will We Make Potions?’ A Description of Elementary Science Clubs in Winona,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Stark Auditorium.

Moore has organized after-school science clubs at elementary schools in Winona for the past two years. The clubs use intellectually challenging science and math materials that several local schools have started using in their curriculum.

In the presentation, Moore will explain the rationale behind the clubs and describe some of the changes he’s seen in WSU students who have participated as facilitators. A small science club exercise will help illustrate the reasoning and experiences.

Moore earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota and has taught in the physics department at WSU since 2005. Throughout his time at WSU, he has become increasingly involved in science education efforts, including work on the coordinating committee for the regional science and engineering fair; working with Jefferson Elementary science, technology, engineering and math teachers; and organizing summer workshops and elementary school science clubs.
