Winona State University Improving Our World
Winona State University announces the 2013-14 university theme is Civic Action: Meeting the Challenge of Improving Our World.

This year’s theme will promote and celebrate acceptance of social responsibility and active participation in meeting the challenges of a modern society. Civic action will take shape through political activity, community service, engagement in leadership roles, advocacy and becoming informed on issues that relate to social change. The theme also will be incorporated through the Lyceum Series, CLASP Lecture Series, Frozen River Film Festival and WSU’s Common Book Project.

The theme will kick of with an Activism Jam 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, outside Kryzsko Commons. Other special events include a Community Action Organizing Workshop that will connect faculty with community organizations to help them design relevant curricula projects together; a nonpartisan grassroots organizer training program designed for college students and young adults sponsored by Campus Camp Wellstone; a presentation and panel discussion about the Peace Corps; the second annual W.E.L.L. conference; and a visit from Tim DeChristopher, leader of the Peaceful Uprising climate justice activist group.
