Professional Science Master's Degree

Winona State now offers a Professional Science Master’s Degree for those looking to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics.

Winona State University’s new Professional Science Master’s Degree in Applied Research and Management is designed to provide advanced training, greater professional mobility, and improved job-security for professionals and recent graduates wishing to further their careers in science-related fields.

“Today’s employers are looking for professionals with science or mathematics knowledge as well as business fundamentals, project management, team-building and communication skills,” said Charla Miertschin, dean of the College of Science and Engineering at WSU.

The PSM is an innovative graduate degree that allows students to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics while remaining employed and earning university credits for work with a partnered employer.

WSU’s PSM program consists of two years of academic training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area, along with internships and “cross-training” in skill areas that are in high demand, including business, project management, communications and regulatory affairs. All programs have been developed in concert with employers and are designed to dovetail into present and future professional career opportunities.

The program also offers a flexible capstone experience, said PSM Director Scott Segal. “Unlike a traditional master’s program in which a student completes a thesis project, students in WSU’s PSM program design a capstone experience that can incorporate a combination of internship or research, allowing them to build and demonstrate advanced scientific skills that will further their career.”
