Climate Summit Interns Lauren Stagakis and Jorge Segovia

Winona State University will hold the WSU Climate Summit: Sustainability, Water and Climate Change—Why it Matters to YOU! April 17-20 on the WSU campus.

The summit will raise awareness, bring the community together and start conversations about climate change and environmental ethics. The summit will feature student work, including photography exhibits, informative poster displays and dance.

The inspiration for the summit came from a December travel study to Ecuador organized by Linda D’Amico, global studies professor at WSU. D’Amico and students experienced life in underprivileged communities in Ecuador and learned about the threat of losing clean water resources.

Climate Summit interns are collecting two-liter plastic bottles to build a real-sized plastic house. The house, called “The Greenhouse Project,” will be a symbol of sustainability, water and climate change. It will be on display during the Climate Summit as a symbol of how to recycle and make something beautiful out of seemingly disposable plastic.

The Climate Summit also will liaison with the Model UN and prepare a special ceremony to present a time capsule to WSU President Scott Olson for his inauguration, and to ensure that WSU is deliberate about reducing carbon emissions by 2050.
