Grandparents University 2013, sponsored by the WSU Retiree Center, will feature six different majors: composite materials engineering, English, geoscience, global studies, mass communication, and recreation and tourism. Participants will learn in WSU classrooms with WSU professors, and sample the many summer highlights of WSU and the City of Winona.

The class “Astronomy—Hey, What’s Up?” will explore the astronomical and human-made objects that inhabit the night sky. Jennifer Anderson, associate professor of geoscience at WSU, will explore the Sun, the Moon, the planets in our solar system, comets, asteroids, meteors and satellites. Computer programs will be used to help navigate around the night sky and identify what’s up. Each grandchild/grandparent team will build a small, functioning telescope to use for their own future explorations of the night sky.

Other classes include: Outdoor Quest! (kayak/canoe/geocache); Bonjour, French Friends!; Composites in a Material World; Our Family Stories; and The Thrill of Digital Photography.

Participants do not have to be a grandparent to participate. Grandparents University offers any special “Grandfriend” the opportunity to explore college life and create lifelong memories. Grandparents University also will accept trios of participants. Two grandparents can bring one grandchild, or one grandparent can bring two grandchildren. All must be enrolled in the same major.

On-campus housing in WSU’s New Residence Hall is available.
