Winona State University will host “Soul Food Dinner 2013” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the East Hall of Kryzsko Commons. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The theme for the dinner is African/African-American Storytelling through drum, dance and song: African Hymns, Gospel, Blues and Jazz. The event is a musical extravaganza of the African and the African-American Diaspora and the culture of the African and African-American Griot.

The event will feature and Bettie Mae Fikes, Freedom Singer and Civil Rights Activist. The Titambe West African Dance and Drum Ensemble is a unique, world- class ensemble from Minneapolis, Minn. Fikes was a leader for the Student Non-Violent Coordination Committee in the Civil Rights Movement and emerged as a music leader. She is a dynamic lecturer and known as a musical genius of storytelling.

Tickets are available for purchase in the Inclusion and Diversity Office 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tickets will also be sold 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Lower Hyphen, Kryzsko Commons. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under twelve.

The event is presented by the Winona State University Black Student Union and sponsored by WSU Inclusion and Diversity Office, Southeast Technical College, and Target Corporation.
